Hi all
One of my 9 week old Pugs (Eddie) started to act funny on Tuesday afternoon, his mouth was hanging open, his face and eyes just looked wrong and he was turning to the right all the time. By the end of Tuesday night he was struggling to breathe, I was so concerned I took him to the emergency vets who diagnosed a chest infection ( even though he didn't have a temperature) and gave him a shot of antiboitics and a decongestant and advised us to bring him back the following morning. The injections did nothing for him and we took him on the Wed afternoon and the vet again gave him another shot of antibiotics and a steriod shot and said bring him back if we were concerned. That teatime he had some kid of fit and became so distressed that we rushed back to the vets and they said he wouldnt make it through the night and advised that he needed a specialist, we then rushed him 55 miles to Chestergate Referal hospital and they perfomed blood tests abd a CSF tap and gave him fluids. They scanned his brain and discoverd that he had several patches of inflammation on his brain. They said they had never seem encephalitis in puppy soo young and would treat him with steriods, so far he has improved 100% and is home now but he has to take 4 different meds for 2 weeks until we go back. The specialists cannot offer any explanation as to why this has happend but we are putting our money on his 1st vaccination and a reaction to it....has anyone else had a similar experience to this? we are really worried

Aw I'm so sorry that happened to you and your pup, but I'm glad to hear he has improved. I am worried about this with Sophie, I've read about it and it sounds terrible. I haven't had any experience with it to offer any suggestions or other comments about it.

Thanks for all your support, it really helps. he is now 10 weeks old and hes had this 1 week ago or so. They said there where pathes of immflamation on his brain, they have put him on 4mg a day of Prednisolone (steriod), 50g per day Sylonux antibiotics, and Zantac and Antepsin gastric protectants. They arer using the Prednisolne to surpress his immune system, he responded staright away from the steriods and is eating really well and is happy. The vets said they had never seem a case of meningisencephilitis ina puppy so young so we are pinning our hopes on it being a severe reaction to the 1st vaccinations. Hopefully between the steriods and anitboitics he will recover enough to come off ar down from the steriods....will kepp you informed

Hi All,
just a quick update on Eddies health, hes now 16 weeks old and doing well. Hes been on his steriods since he developed this problem and now he has reached 4 months old and nearly 4kg in weight they are now dropping his steriods over the next 6 weeks to see how he will react. He cant stay on the steriods for too long as they are already stunting his growth so its 50/50% now as to whether he relapses or gets better so fingers crossed. I do have a question tho, Eddies showed the vet said he needed to be put on a low protien diet as it was too rich for him, something more starchy so it will make him feel fuller for longer so he can be fed less food, hes on dry puppy food at the moment at 20% protein. Does anyone know of any good dry dog foods, the vet suggested maybe a diabetes diet? I was always under the impression that puppies needed protein to grow? If anyone can offer any suggestions on which dry dog food is out there that might fit the bill we would aprreciate it

i'm so glad that eddie is doing well but we will still keep paws crossed over here to get him stronger everyday!
i'm confused about the low protien diet thing. usually, a low protien diet is for a dog with kidney or urinary problems. i might be wrong, but 20% sounds on the lower end already. i kinda thought growing puppies needed the protein also. if the food you are giving him is too rich, i suggest getting a food with limited ingredients. i know california natural has a few as does natural balance. natural balance has many varieties in their puppy formulas to choose from. as far as filling him up with starch so he doesn't have to be fed that often...i wonder why your vet said that? i would think puppies of that age are still being fed 3x a day and being that he is such a little peanut already, i would think he would want him to eat. adding starch might be as easy as adding some mashed canned beans to his food like chick peas, navy beans or even kidney beans. i am by no means a vet or any kind of expert in the subject but i'm just confused about this whole thing. i have to think about this...i'll get back to ya

Yes, I am with you on this one, my gut instinct is telling me to keep him on his puppy food, I am confused too the only thing that showed up in his blood work was his chol was high at 11.17 but the vet said that was normal with a dog on steriods, and his monos where a bit high suggesting some inflammation somewhere in his body but no infection was present. She did say that the inflamation on his brain doesnt show up in blood tests so the inflammation showing is somewhere else. Eddies weight is 3.75kg at the moment and he is 16 weeks of age and to look at him he still has skinny legs but a pugs body. He certainly doesnt look overweight. Im sure the vet mentioned something about steriods affecting how Edddies body manages body fat and that they turn the protien he eats into fat but dont quote me on that, it was a hectic vets appointment. I am a bit worried about changing his food still. I take a picture of Eddie and post it so you can see how he is now

DoublePugtroubl, I am trying to keep up with this thread, as my girlfriend in Fort Madison, Iowa had a pug that came down with this. Her pug gained alot of weight, due to the steriods. Could be why. I sure hope and pray everything goes well. Still sending prayers.
