Our baby pug (8 months old today) had surgery one month ago for his elongated palate and his stenotic nares. He was doing great the first couple weeks after surgery (I would actually have to check if he was breathing because he was no longer gasping for air and his chest no longer "bounced" while breathing). The vet told us without the surgery he would have died. After the surgery he was a whole new puppy. But, this past weekend he started getting a little congested sounding. We took him to the vet and he prescribed some antibiotics for him, but said he is concerned that he is congested this soon after the surgey and thinks there could be some other issues with him. He recommends we take Jake for a CAT scan and scoping. He thinks it could possibly be an autoimmune disease or even something else (I can't remember what he was saying he gave us so much information) - a mis-shapen something with his nose (something that could only be detected with the CAT scan and scoping). He said that if he gets congested again after the antibiotics, we definitely recommends getting this done. My poor little puppy is only 8 months old and has already been on antibiotics like 3 times (not including after surgery). He said if it is the one thing we might have to take the puppy to University of Penn or even NY (we live in PA) because there are so few vets that do that type of surgery. And they could even say they don't recommend the surgery for him. I feel so bad for him and am so scared that something will happen and we will lose him. Has anyone else had issues like this after the palate and nares surgery? Thanks...

Thank you! He seems to be doing good with the antibiotics, but we are worried that he will get congested again after the treatment is finished.

He is doing good, but not sure if it is because of the antibiotics doing their job. When he plays too hard or being outside to go potty he pants alot and sounds like he's having trouble not getting enough breath, but he does also have a small trachea, so not sure if it is that or just from tuckering himself out. He's been in the ac all the time except if he's going potty, which hopefully is helping him too. He seems good - eats, drinks, goes potty, sleeps, plays normally. I'm trying to be strong while he is on the meds, but not sure how I will be if he gets congested again after the treatment is over.
Thank you everyone for your prayers.

Glad to hear he's doing a bit better. Hopefully this will be the last of the congestion and he can go on living a happy life. Keeping him in my prayers.

You mentioned he's in a room with AC all the time ... dry air can make nasal congestion worse by drying up mucous membranes and causing a stuffy nose and scratchy throat. A humidifier might be something to look into. Also if your pug has allergies dry air can make his symptoms worse. A 25mg pill of benedryl might help too ... http://pugspot.com/forums/topics/question-about-benedryl

Thanks, charliemurphy! I never even thought of that. With all the heat and humidity we need him to be in the ac. I'll have to try that!

Poor baby! But sounds like he's lucky to have such devoted parents who care for him. Its just awful to feel so hlpless when our babies get sick. Good luck xxx

Thanks! Jake goes back the dr tomorrow night for a re-check now that he is done with his antibiotics. Then probably back to the surgeon for a consultation and possible scoping. Poor Jakey

Baby Jake had his follow up appointment last night and GOOD NEWS the doctor thinks he is just a noisy pug with small nasal passages and a small trachea. And he has been regurgitating (not throwing up) and he thinks that could be from the 2 little rocks in his belly. Seems as though baby Jake has been eating rocks again without us seeing. The dr discovered them when he did x-rays checking for a hernia which could have been why he was regurgitating... So hopefully we can get him to pass these rocks and from now on jake will have to be leash walked.
