Elongated Soft Palate Surgery

We just found out today that our baby Jake (6 months old) needs to have surgery to shorten his soft palate. He was at the vet to get neutered and they told us they couldn't doing it because of this - it would be too risky. I had told them before the surgery he has been wheezy for the last week or so, which I was concerned about with the anesthesia. I am freaking out and have a million questions, but I only picked up pieces of what the doc was telling me. My husband has a call in to the vet to pick up all the info I missed. I know this is fairly common in pugs, but I would like some information from personal experience with this. Thank you!

Has Jake had his surgury yet? I know several on here has had that surgury and done just fine. Trudie our 6 year old rescue also needs it done, we are just trying to figure out which place we need to take her to.

No he hasn't had the surgery yet. We have a consultation on the 31st (it's not an emergency at this point). Good luck with your little Trudie.

Hi, The surgery isn't too bad, but get it done by a surgeon that uses a laser and that has done it before....Lexi had it done at 4years old. They removed 8mm. of pallet and also made her nostrils larger for easier breathing. It has worked great and the recoup time is about a couple of days if done with a laser. If it's done with a scalpel, recoup is a couple of weeks. The laser will seal the veins and nerves that are severed with less blood loss. The nose will look kind of gross after and it may ooze a little, but it only lasts a couple of days. Good Luck! Keep us posted and if you have any more questions go ahead and ask..........Doc, Lexi's dad
