We have two fawn pugs , a male that is 8yrs old and a female whom we rescued last summer who is 6 . We are having an awful time with our male Macker , he has skin problems where he breaks out under his little arm pit . He scratches until it oozes and bleeds and this breaks our hearts . We have spent hundreds of dollars at our vet and she is at at loss on what to do next . So if anyone can help us it would be a god send !
Mia the little girl who we rescued had an awful life as a breeder dog , she had been starved and neglected . When we rescued her she looked awful was so thin and had 3mummified pups who were poisoning her , they did surgery and after a lot of patients and love she has learned to trust and love us as much as we love her . Our tiny little girl is not so tiny any more and I have decided to put her on a diet food as she is getting over weigh . But I am not sure what is a good diet food for her ?
Thanks

Hello and Welcome! I would check what you are feeding Macker - a lot of pugs are allergic to their food. We use grain-free and haven't had any problems. Our vet said that both of my girls are "obese" so we have cut down on their food and have added canned green beans. I just rinse them off to get as much salt off as possible. And watch how many treat you give her. Our vet suggested using their food as treats and it works ... just a couple of pieces at at a time. Cheeries are good, too!
Thank God you rescued Mia ...
I'm Ellen and my babies are Zoe (4), Peyton (3), Webster (2) and Liberty (1)

Since you have seen your vet and he or she doesn't know why Macker is scratching-that's a tough one. I assume Demodex mites, fleas, ringworm, have all been ruled out. What about an allergy-maybe a blanket made of something he is sensitive to, or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that makes him scratch and then hot spots develop? Could it be his shampoo or dry skin due to heat running inside the house? Is it nervous scratching from something that could be stressing him out? Has he been doing this a long time or a short time? Because if it started recently, maybe you can think of any change in surroundings, food, products used in the house. Could he be a little jealous of Mia? Just trying to help think of any possibilities. Some plants outside can cause itching and some dogs are allergic to fleas-even if they get just one and you get rid of it immediately they can scratch on and on. Same for ants. If it is just that one spot though, and it is never going away-it's probably not bites. Has the vet tried a cortisone treatment? Iv'e got my first pug but I have had small dogs my whole life and scratching for unknown reasons is always hard to figure out. With mine it was usually "issues" with nervousness during the summer because in Savannah, Ga we get lots of thunderstorms from May-September. Once they started licking or scratching a spot it became a habit. If the tv was on and a thunderstorm warning sound came on, they started licking and scratching -alot of times it didn't even hit our area but just the warning got them nervous.
Poor little Mia-she deserves every bite of that food you gave her if she had been starved. People who do that should be locked up in jail and starved forever. Now that she is a little pudgy, maybe lots of veggies and some fruit instead of fatty treats. The diet type food probably would be good. People having pugs longer than me probably will know some good ones. Maybe switch her over slowly so she doesn't notice too much. My pugger is 6 months old so no diet food right now. She may need it one day though because she is not small and dainty-she is more like a bull in a china shop!
Good luck with both of them-people on this site have great advice.

It has to be allergies. My pug is o.k., but my lab has allergies to just about everything I think. She is on Benedryl had has oatmeal baths. She is on completely grain free food and treats and no cheating! It takes around a month or so for things to start coming under control. Good Luck!!! Welcome to our web-site. Dco and his girls
