I have a pug (Rosco) and he is just about a year old. My concern is he still "potties" like a girl rather than lift his leg. Is there something wrong with him or is that normal?

Not at all. My Rexi is 17 months and potties like a girl, he learnt form his sister Flower. I actually prefers that he potties this way, saves having to hose down garden furniture and walls etc

Peyton was about 13 months old before he lifted his leg ... then he immediately started marking everything ... inside and out. Thank God a friend told me about belly bands!!! Peyton is 3-1/2 and he cannot be trusted without a belly band. Webster was just the opposite - he was very young when he lifted his leg because he wanted to do everything his big brother did. I'm just glad that he doesn't mark in the house. Outside it's a pissing match between the two of them ... wherever one of them pees the other has to pee over it then the first one goes back and pees again! I just try to keep the girls out of their way but they get peed on ... a lot!

Ok thank you everyone! And once he does start lifting his leg I will look into a belly band, because i have never heard of them before

There isn't anything wrong with him. Does it bother you that he doesn't? It doesn't make him any less a dog you know. TeeHee. Many males don't hike. Is he potting in the house? If so, be glad he isn't hiking yet, it would be on your furniture. You can use belly bands and they are great to help keep the pee off of the floor and furniture. I would also think about neutering soon if you haven't yet. It also doesn't make him any less a man, and will help with the potty training.

BELLY BANDS BELLY BANDS a gift from God . They have saved alot of my furniture. My 7 year old male wears one all the time. I believe he started lefting his leg right away but it wasn't until we bought our female pug in that he started marking in the house.

I get a kick out of my son's rescue pit(big white one), Ernie. Such a big boy and he squats like a girl.HA! He does lift his leg every once in awhile, but usually it's when he comes over to our house and has to re-mark everything in the back yard. Our previous pug,Gretta, would lift her leg whenever she'd pee. I think that it had something to do with her not getting her foot wet. I'm not that qualified to talk about boy dogs though. All we've ever had were females. Good luck, Doc

Just wondering if you pug is fixed? When I adopted my pug the owner told me he would start lifting his leg after six months if I didn't get him fixed. At six months he started lifting his leg and marking his territory outside and in my house! I managed to get him in and get him fixed right away and he went back to squat peeing.

Bah - that's apile of nonsense! All my dogs are fixed and both my males lift their legs like pros. And both of them were neutered late. I think some dogs prefer to "squat" - especially if they are raised with female dogs. Too make it even crazier, the females will sometimes lift their leg to pee when they see the males do that. The girls will "mark" on top of other pee spots that way.

I don't think there's anything wrong with him. Our oldest pug Sheldon used to pee that way. Then one day he just started lifting his leg. Now we have a new boy, Jake and he does the same thing - goes like a girl. I'm sure one day he'll start lifting his leg too. Maybe it's a coordination thing - little pups can't balance themselves to lift a leg? Oh, and every now and again Sheldon will not lift his leg, but rather stretch it out to the back and go.... And other times you think the little guy is going to topple over from lifting his leg so high...LOL!!!!!

i was told that lifting their legs is a learnt behaviour and not instinctive, so unless they see another dog do it they probably wont lift their legs!? my lil Sonny is nearly 1 and raised with my lil girl Skye, he has never lifted his leg yet???

Nothing is wrong-be GLAD he is not hiking! (Bet he will soon, though).

No he hasn't been fixed, we have another male dog, but he doesn't care to much for my pug because my pug is (surprisingly) way to playful for him. But I am happy that he doesn't lift his leg, i was just wondering if it was normal.

I have a girl & a boy. My boy Charlie has gone pee like a girl since the day we got him. Everyone once & awhile he will lift his leg but not too often. He is ALL boy in every other way.

samm010, get the males neutured. It will solve alot of your problems. And they will be better dogs for it. It won't stop lifting of leg as that's the way they are. Most young dogs don't lift leg until around a yr or more. Getting them neutured will help as they won't mark their territory once the harmons start flowing. And you won't have so much humping.
