My Dog Eats Everything!
My dog Winston can't be left alone because he eats everything. I would love to leave him in the backyard for example but he will eat all of the poop, grass, weeds, sticks, and rocks out of the back yard. He's like a goat!
I need some help figuring out a method for breaking him from this habit. It's the same thing on walks (which we do pretty frequently) he will dive for dandelions and pick up things from the side walk. We stop for a pee and he will pick up some bark. Inside he has problems too, in the past he's been trusted to be left alone and he has destroyed cd's, hats, and furniture.
the best thing when you are not home is to find him a safe zone...either a winston proofed room w/ a gate or door closed ( we put my pugs in the master bathrooom as its large, tiled, and has no low cords, outlets etc.) or a crate. for your dogs safety AND the houses. pugs are very mouth/food oriented. mine will respond to "no" and leave it & thats what i do on a walk if they try to eat something.as you walk keep him on track & when you see something picked his interest detract him.
My Maddie eats everything too, and she's TWO years old. I hoped it was a puppy thing but I've noticed that she is getting better. She'll put things in her mouth now then spit them out. I'm still hoping she'll outgrow it.
Welcome Pugthugs! Desi used to eat rocks! LOL. So I bought him a bone from the pet store. It was hard like a rock and he could not swallow it like a rock! Also there is a spray called"Phooey". It taste awfull and thus keeps pups from chewing on things you spray it on. But first you must give your pup a little squirt on their toung, the idea being they experience how awful it taste and then stay away from anything that smells like it! Good luck !
It's a good time to start training the Leave it command. Also carry a water squirt bottle with you on walks, and put one in reach in every room. Go to a dollar store and get cheap ones. Then have some fun letting him have it with the water, at the same time yell LEAVE IT!. On walks, you can also do a collar correction with a flick of the leash, same command. In the yard, first pug proof your yard. Plants, bushes, anything that could make a pugger sick. In the house do not let him have free run of the house when you are not there to suppervise. A gated pug proofed room will be best or a cage or crate. Takes time so have patients.
