Nails

Okay, my 2 year old pug has really long nails. And I have never trimmed his nails before because when we first got him (1years old is when we got him ) He didn't have long nails like he does now. Again I am saying this but, I have never trimmed his nails before. I don't know and how to trim his nails. Advice Tips, and Help is appreciated
Thank You!

Well, I hate to say this, but I leave it to a professional. And everytime I go the groomer tells me that pugs are notorius for not liking their nails trimmed. Rather than get into a big power struggle or injuring Ravi, I leave it to someone who knows what she is doing. Maybe if you start trimming at 8 weeks it would make a difference. Good luck! Usha

I use pedipaws on my gals. they don't seem to mind at all but they sure hated getting them clipped.

Me too. Sassie has a couple of nails that grow round in a circle - and fast! It only takes a couple weeks. I take her to the vet.

Jabba's co owner (a DVM) did his nails, it was a struggle but as a vet she knew exactly how to hold him... she taught me and no problems since. One of the big things is getting the right clipper for the job. Do not get the ones that slide forward with a 'V' where you put the nails. Get a pair that shears with two cutting edges. No crushing and no sensation of pressure. Hope this helps.

You can take them to a dog groomer and for a few dollars they can trim them for you. Or some Vets will do it as well. Do not let the nails get so long. It makes it hard on their feet. If you are wanting to learn how to do this have your Vet explain how, and show you, so you don't cut the quick inside the dogs toe nails. They will bleed badly. Leaving them so long also make the quick longer and when you do finally have them trimmed the nail can not be cut back far enough. Have them trimmed once a month. Some dogs put up a fight when having this done. They don't like it. So you need to know what you are doing. Have someone show you? Or let the groomer do it for you.

I have a Dremel nail grooming kit that works well. However, I usually only use it on my Labrador because my Pug isn't very fond of it. Luckily my Pug grinds his nails down pretty well just walking so he rarely has to get his nails trimmed.

My pug hates having his nails trimmed and I have only had them done professionally once when the doggy salon did it when they bathed him. The vets in the UK charge more than the doggy salon and the salon does the whole wash brush etc etc.

My advice is to make sure you pug gets a good dose of walking on concrete and that will keep them short.

I prefer to walk Boone in the woods so he can run around, but I make sure he gets some concrete walking too and it saves those trips to the professional

Lewie is a right rat bag at getting his nails done, he also has long curly quicks too.. I take him to the groomers every 4-6 weeks, I dont pay as my best friend is the groomer but she would only normally charge £5 to be done. xx
