New foster pugs!

I've got 2 new foster pugs heading here around Friday.  A male and a female, unknown age, coming from a "breeding operation" in Danville.  There's actually three of them but we can only take two.  One fawn male, one fawn female, and one black female.  And ohmygosh, are they adorable!!!  I can't wait to post pictures.  We're going to foster the male and one of the females. I can only hope that we don't run into any more alpha female issues.  I loved Buffy, but it got to be stressful keeping her and Molly from eating each other.

Can someone remind me why I volunteered to take two of them?

I think I might call the male Gus.  Short for Augustus.  He looks pretty dignified.    Not too sure about the females though.  I'm not sure which one we'll be getting.  And just a thought: I have intelligence saying that the dogs are 9-10 years old, but I don't think that they look that old.  Judging from the amount of gray, I'd say the fawns are no more than 5 and the black female no more than 6.  Any thoughts on names, ages, and which little girl we should foster?

And isn't that fellah just a bruiser of a pug?  He looks massive!  I can't wait to squish his face and give him kisses.  They're coming to us with all vet issues (spay/neuter, shots, teeth cleaning, microchipping, etc) taken care of, courtesy of the Danville Humane Society and Angels of Assisi.  Bless them for helping us save these adorable, squishy little angels!

OMG!!!! red, they are sooooo ADORABLE!!!!!! look at those faces!!!! i LOVE the name gus, that was a choice we had for mikey but he just looked like a mikey so the name gus is in the bank. i got it from the disney cinderella film, the fat little mouse that they called gus gus...so cute and adorable, just like this guy. as far as which female...how can you choose, both so cute...of course you can't go wrong with a black female but i feel bad picking one over the other. whichever ones you get, give them a big smooch right on the lips from me! i'll start thinking of female names as soon as you let us know the personalities. once again, you are awesome! by the way...how's our buffy doing?

By all the reports I've gotten, our Buffy is doing fantastic.  I think her new family is planning on joining PugSpot soon!  She's only had a couple of poopie accidents in the house and is starting to come out of her shell for them!  They went to Bark in the Park and she was a little Pug magnet.  Their little daughter is trying to clip the leash on her and take her for walks.  I'm so happy for all of them, but sometimes at night I miss my Buffy so badly.  She was the best little bed buddy you could ever ask for.  I'm sure it'll be strange for her family to get her on PugSpot and find that EVERYONE knows Buffy and wants an update on her.

I'm so thrilled to be able to help these little puggers out.  All they've ever been used for is breeding and I'm looking forward to introducing them to the joys of life:  naps in a sunbeam, nylabones, snuggles with their people, good quality food, and maybe...nice walks on a leash!  I'm nervous about what sort of behaviors I'm going to have to deal with, though.  I don't know if they were kept in a cage, or in a dog run, or if they have ever been inside a house!  It's scary, but I can't wait to meet these guys and get them started off in their new lives.  Pug rescue makes me feel so good...

As i had a female who was a puppymill pug and when she was vetted and able to be placed in a foster home she has an issue as she would huddle in corners and when you approached her she would shake as they had the love for her and worked hard with her these issues started to disappear as ime went on.For the short of the story she is like a different pug now as she runs around and plays she is so happy and so loved she is now a member of that family and we are happy for them all.We have such a great life there is nothing better.

OK.  So I think I have names for all three dogs.  Augustus (Gus) for the male, Cleopatra (Cleo) for the black female and Fiona for the fawn female.  Should be picking them up after work tomorrow.  I'm nervous about this one, folks.  Who knows what level of socialization they've had?  You guys might have to come to VA and help me!

That is hard as you want to keep them all but,it's a great feeling when you place them in their forever home as i keep the seniors as most come with health issues and i can't trust that they will get the care they need so they stay with me as i love my seniors .As far as any being placed i'm very  careful as i check everything background, home, vet, family of the persons,as these pugs have been through enough i need to be cautious.

It's gonna be a hot time in the old house...for the next week or more!  They weren't able to spay and neuter the pugs, so I'll have an intact male AND female to deal with!  Still working on how I'll keep them apart so they don't do anything...unspeakable...

uh oh..that will keep you busy for sure...do you know which female you are getting? you definitely have to keep us updated on this one!...that is if you can find some time. maybe you might have to invest in a belly band for the mister and a cute little onesie for the little miss

We are getting the black female.  And the belly band and girlie panties were requested early this morning!  I'm all anxious.  3 hours left to enjoy my sanity!    But you know I would say yes again if given the choice again.  I wouldn't give up pug rescue for anything!

So apparently the dogs already have names!  I'm not a fan of the girls' names, but I'm TOTALLY keeping the boy's name.  The fawn female is Snug, the black female is Hug (they're really sisters from the same litter) and the boy...brace yourself...is named Mr. Big Biscuit!  I'm totally keeping that.  He'll be called Biscuit.  Or The Biscuit.    EEK!  Excited!

RedRoss9, I just love all three names you picked. I think they fit well. And they are adorable pugs. I am going to go along with you on the ages. I think 5-6 is a better guess. Pugs gray out early and alot of none pug people don't know that. Peaches and copper the last ones I had, were both 5 and had alot of graying on the face. And alot of puppymill dogs, if they are lucky the breeders don't breed them to much past that age I am told. Man! I bet you are just jumpin up and down waiting. I wish I was with you. I would be Hoppin like a bunny! LOL!

Holy moly.  It's complete and utter pug mayhem over here.  Mr. Big Biscuit isn't housebroken and he is a VERY loud breather.  Sounds like he has some severe soft pallette issue too.  Not to mention the corneal ulcers in both eyes.  And I think he has some hip and shoulder problems.  He's a sweetie though.  And Buggy, my little black girl, is 12 pounds of spunk!  She's so sweet, and so active, and so TINY!  I'm used to my 23 pound Molly!  I don't think Ms. Buggy has a good tooth in her mouth.  And we're not sure if she's spayed or not.  So you can imagine the fun we're having trying to keep Mr. Biscuit from impregnating Ms. Buggy.  We keep them crated when we're not watching them and at night.  I feel awful about it, but we can't risk any more puppies!  And Mr. Biscuit...he howls all night.  I don't mean for a few minutes here and a few minutes there.  ALL NIGHT.

So in other words, things are settling in over here and we're trying to get a routine going for tomorrow morning when we both have to go to work.  I'll upload some pictures as soon as I get some coffee or tea and breakfast in me.

Your a good Sport Red!  I would love to be there for the mayhem!  LOL  Did you try playing music or the TV for Mr. Big Biscuit?  I know that can be soothing to some dogs.  They don't feel so alone with some background noise.  Worth a try for some sleep!  LOL

And just to let everyone know, I'm NOT swearing in my posts.  Apparently I'm using some questionable letter combinations.  Buggy is 12 pounds of sweetness, not 12 pounds of whatever foul thing it was that the auto-censor decided to use.

we would never think that of you, red...this is definitely a "G" rated forum, so i have to curb myself sometimes, i must admit. it sounds like you have your hands full, wish i could help out. a belly band for the mister b would definitely help and the music thing sounds like a good idea. find something soothing, maybe some classical.

Red, I had that happen due to my masterful spelling too!  I had to open Word and use spell check to get if off one of my post!  LOL That usually happens when I try to post from my Black Berry and I can not edit from that thing!

Just got back from the vet with Buggy and Mr. Big Biscuit (who has been admiring his reflection in the window for the past half hour).  So here's the update.

Mr. Big Biscuit will be neutered on Monday.  He's up to date on all vaccinations and is already microchipped.  He will also be getting a routine dental cleaning.  He has scarring on his eyes from corneal ulcers but he can still see just fine!  No hip or knee problems, either!  And 21.4 pounds is just the right weight for him.  He has a very very dry nose, but the vet said to hold a warm, damp compress on it for a bit and then put Vaseline on it.  How's that for an 8 year old gent?

Ms. Buggy is a little more depressing.  She's had a C-Section at some point in time.  She has some pigmentation issues with her eyes and very dry skin.  She has a yeast infection in her muzzle roll too.  She's also going to have to have most, if not all, of her remaining teeth removed.  We have to get in touch with the other two organizations that helped rescue her to get her vaccination records, if any, and we need to contact her previous owner to see if she was spayed.  The good news is that her lungs and joints are in great shape.  I'm just so depressed about the poor girl losing her teeth.  It's just such a detriment to her adoption and it's going to be painful for her for a few weeks.  She has so much life in her and so much love to give...and people won't want her because of a tongue hanging out of her mouth and a lifetime of canned food.  I have to admit, the prospects of the ever-dangling tongue are a bit distasteful to me, but I love her!  I'll just find a way to keep her at work with me and mist her tongue for her every few minutes so that it doesn't dry out!

So...good news and not so good news.  I'm gonna go snuggle with my Molly and Buggy and Stan and Mr. Big Biscuit.

poor little buggy...i'm so sorry to hear that she has those problems, but once she is feeling better and with that cute little face, i'm sure someone will just be smitten with her, tongue and all. even my mikey's tongue hangs out a little sometimes...i find it endearing. are you sure her tongue will hang out? the canned food doesn't bother me so much, it's more of giving her some kind of treat for just being adorable...what kind of treat do you give a pug with no teeth? on the other hand...woo hoo mr. biscuit!!!

keep updating us, red, when you can...you know how attached we get to your fosters

Aww, Red they are both adorable and that toung is endearing just like Carol said!  Buggy's sweet face just tugs at my heart, I just want to hug her and kiss that face!  So give those two a big hug and kiss from all of us!  Give yourself a big hug too as I know how difficult it is to watch them go through the hard times, but the good times are just aroung the corner.  And really for Buggy and Mr. Big Biscuit,"the good times" are now.  Just being with someone that loves them and gives them that soft place to land at the end of the day.

Keep us posted, and any pictures would be great too!  Pug hugs kid!

Sorry I haven't gotten around to uploading the pictures.  It's been a rough, busy week.   I just got to Mom's house about an hour ago and I'm super pooped.  On the plus side, Molly is super pooped too so I'll probably be able to sleep in.  But I digress.  I ought to be able to get some free time tomorrow to upload a few pictures of Buggy and Mr. Big Biscuit!  And just so you know, the third pug is being fostered about 35 miles from me and is now called Gita.  She's in pretty much the same shape Buggy is.  Ah...I must go.  I believe I hear a nice soft bed calling.  Now if I can just figure out a way to crank Mom's thermostat down into the 60's...because 75 degrees is WAY too hot for comfortable sleeping.

OH Red, Sorry about Buffy. It will work out soon. Did the family deside or did your rescue to rehome. Use some Vit. E gel caps on Mr. Biscuts nose. Better for him. It will soften the nose and if he licks it? It's good for the skin and coat. Buy the cheapest brand. Just snip the gel cap and sweeze it on his nose. And Ms Buggy will do fine once she gets all fixed up. You will be surprised at how someone will see her loving kind ways and won't care a bit about a little tongue. HAHA! China Roses tongue hangs out the side of her bottom jaw. And I love it. Adds that little special something. Am sending lots and lots of prayers to ya.

I am keeping a friend's rescued peks this weekend and one doesn't have any teeth. She feeds her. Nutro Natural Choice adds water microwaves it 30 seconds give it a stir and you have food they can eat and it is a balanced diet and easy to prepare! It has a gravey like sauce when you add water so the dogs love it!

15d63fbf9fce5f79_s
RedRoss9 (over 7 years ago)

I do something very similar to that for Buggy already.  I mix up some dry food (Blue Buffalo Chicken and Brown rice) with some canned food (Blue Buffalo Chicken) and some water and then I microwave it for a bit.  She eats it like the little pig that she is!

Mr. Big Biscuit just got out of surgery and is doing fine.  He no longer has his "biscuits" and had to have 7 teeth removed!  Poor little man.  I'm sure he was confused when he woke up missing his chompers and a large portion of his masculinity.  We can pick him up after 2pm tomorrow.  And now that we know that Buggy isn't spayed, we can schedule that for the end of June when it's safe to do so.  Thank goodness she's willing to wear diapers, otherwise this being in heat thing would be a huge mess.

They are adorable!  I especially love the first photo!   What kind of treatment is performed for eye pigmantation problems?

15d63fbf9fce5f79_s
RedRoss9 (over 7 years ago)

The proper term for this is pigmentary keratitis.  Treatment is the use of Cyclosporine or Tacrolimus eyedrops given once to three times daily to try to remove the pigment. Surgery on the eye can help if the scar tissue is being cause by entropion.  It's generally not too much of a problem unless it starts to cover the pupil.  This problem does seem to be more common in pugs than in many other breeds.  It's probably due to the structure of the face (muzzle roll, bulgy eyes, shallow eye sockets, etc.)  I remember reading an article on it.  If you're interested, I could probably find it again.

And YES these babies are adorable.  I'm totally in love with them.  Especially Buggy.  She's such a joy.  Mr. Big Biscuit is such a goofy goober that you can't help but love him!  And Molly...what to say about Molly.  She's a very expressive dog and finds many many ways to show her displeasure.  That's her sulky pose.  I wish you guys lived closer so that you could come meet the bumble!

2e40ba33b8dcd7f2_s
KatB (over 7 years ago)

Red, they ARE adorable. I am pleased that Buffy's family is working with her. Can't wait to here what the problem was. With rescues, you have to work through the problems. Some have so many. It's so sad. But the brighter side is most of all they are getting a second chance at a wonderful life. That is how it should be. And through it all education about dogs is learned.
