pug and the rain.... anyone else have this problem?

My pug Sparky don't like the rain. He wont go outside if its raining. It'll rain the whole day and he wont go outside. I have to put him on a leash and pick him up n take him out. Then he pees once and tries to run for the house. When its not raining he'll be outside peeing for like 5 minutes. My sister had a pug and he would do the same thing. Giving him a bath is hard also he freezes up and I can't get him to turn or anything. Does anyone else have this problem?

OMG my guys don't like the rain or snow either. Keep him outside till he does his bussness and good luck.

PinkPugINK (over 8 years ago)

Cinnamon gets scared when he feels raindrops on him...he can't figure out where they're coming from. But other than that he doesn't try to run back inside or anything.

This will be his first winter so I don't now how he'll feel about snow. I was thinking of getting him little shoes so his feet don't get wet. Maybe that's why Sparky doesn't like going outside when it's wet?

jesseck2009 (over 8 years ago)

I dont know I've been trying to find a pair of shoes for him but I havent found a pair at the right price. He don't have a problem with the snow. It snowed here the other day and he looked like a little kid in the candy store. It was so adorable.

I've noticed the only pugs in my house that don't like the rain are the ones born in the summer.  All the puppies I raised that came home in the rainy months don't mind the rain at all.  Plus, my Simon loves to have a bath and will jump at the sink and bark asking to be bathed.  You can try to create a covered peeing area where your pug and go potty and stay dry while doing it.  Then your pug will take his/her time going potty in the dry zone.  Other than that all I can say is be sure to put on a warm coat and take your umbrella.  Once your pug learns the only way they're gonna get back inside is if they go potty, they'll start going potty faster.  You just have to make sure you don't fall for the fake out in the beginning.  Once your pug figures out your not "really" watching him and they can pretend they went potty you'll have a whole new problem on your hands.  It's best to let them know from the start you're watching and waiting to "see" the potty happening.  I actually trained one of my pugs to go on command.  I was competeing in rally obedience and if a dog pottys in the ring it's an immediate disqualification.  So I started telling my pug to "go Pee Pee" for number one and to "finish up" when I wanted him to go number two.  It didn't take him long to learn what I wanted and going potty was a piece of cake.  If it was raining and I knew he hadn't gone #2 in a while I would tell him to "finish up" and he would no problem.

Good luck getting your pug to potty in the rain.  Even my pugs aren't perfect and at times when it is raining they pee on the open door instead of going out side and doing their business.

mikey hates the rain, i have to physically carry him out to do his business, even then sometimes he lifts his leg and nothing comes out just so he can get his little treat. that's when i turn to him and say,"oh,no! i'm not falling for that, no fake outs here, do something for real!!!"...then he will go. rosie will go out under protest.

karypug6....can you come over and train my pugs please!

Sophie hates the rain as well. We bought her a rain coat and she seems to be a lot better about going out in the rain. This winter will be her first snow, and it snows pretty bad here in nothern Ohio, so I bought her a parka, but I'm thinking about booties too.

tanziesmom (over 8 years ago)

I sure am lucky!!!!!!!!  Tanzie was born in July, but she was born and raised in Oregon!!!!!

It's the rain capital of America!( Sorry Wahington state, but it seems that way to me LOL)

Sure she prefers to go out when it's dry, but over here she has had to learn to not only go out when it's whet, but in hurrican strength winds as well.  If I tried to paper train her, the little stubborn wench, she would go in the house all the time.  Can't do that,  My husband bought me rain gear just for her potty runs.  She wears a coat when we go out and now we are going shopping for a rain coat as well.  It's rather funny how my hubby did not want her to "wear" clothes, yet it was his idea to take her shopping.  Do we give in to our pugs more that we did to any of our children? Just a thought.

Mom2Pugs (over 8 years ago)

Jessick2009, my little girl Bella hates the rain.  I have to put her out the door so she will do her "Business".  We have a gazebo in the back yard and they will run down the path to the gazebo to take cover.  Sometimes it is as if they think they may melt if they get too wet!  LO  Even Desi doesn't really care for the rain.  He will find the first thing handy and pee on it and return to the door as soon as possible!  The rain coat thing helps Bella, but I usually don't us it unless it is really pouring rain.

RedRoss9 (over 8 years ago)

Stan doesn't mind the rain, but he will wander around and sniff and look and act like he's going to go potty and then change his mind.  Sometimes it'll take half an hour to get him to go when it's raining.

KatB (over 8 years ago)

China rose and sulynn, will go out but they don't like it either. If it is really poring hard forget it. I do have a big golf umbrella, so when it's poring I walk out in the rain with them and they will pee at my feet. I have to watch out though, Sulynn pooped on my foot one time. HAHAHAHA!  I have little rain coats for them too. Rosie likes hers, and sulynn hates hers.

PugsLeesMom (over 8 years ago)

Pugs Lee hates the rain too! I have to carry him outside and down the steps but once we're out for a while he's fine. The winters are hilarious because his feet get cold so he tries to do a handstand when he's walking so he keeps his feet off of the snow. Haha. I'm going to get him boots this year so he won't be doing any stunts in the snow!

hlynnr (over 8 years ago)

its hilarous how stuborn pugs are!! Stewy and Ranger both hate the Rain ,Wind , Heat , Cold , Snow , you name it and they don't like it , they will run outside do there business and run back into the house as if they will melt if they get wet! I call them Bat Dogs because they love to be outside at night , seriously they spend more time outside around 9-10pm then anyother time of the day

puggylou (over 8 years ago)

we have the same excact problem. puggylou hates the rain, and baths. she tugs and tugs and struggles trying to get out of her leash when it is wet outside, and she will not go arther than 3 houses down the street, then she tugs at this certain tree sayin' "i'm not moving one more step. i wanna go home and play with my squeaky toy!" and one time, when it was snowing, she wouldn't go to the bathroom for 2 days!! and on all the walks she was wearing her booties, and 2 of her warmest coats. and when i lift her over to go into the tub, she clings her claws into me so it's hard to drop her in. puggy hates everything wet, and when we tried to get her into a lake, she would sit on us to stay dry! stubborn little puggy, but you gotta love her!<3

WinstonsMom (over 8 years ago)

I'm so lucky! Winston loves the snow, and whle it is a struggle to get him to do his business in the backyard when it's raining, if I take him for a walk he's more than happy to go! He's also not crazy about baths, but he's not awful. He loves the water in general though, this summer he learned how to jump in the pool! I had to get him a life jacket for when we're up on the pool deck, because he jumps right in, no fear at all! It's crazy how different they all are!

Mom2Pugs (over 8 years ago)

Desi is like Winston, he likes the pool but hates the rain?  Bella on the other  hand hates the rain and the pool!  LOL

aesonnack (over 8 years ago)

Mugsy can't stand getting wet!  I have finally just resorted to putting a puppy pad down in the garage and letting the poor guy go in there when its really coming down to avoid getting a bladder infection from trying to hold it in all day!!!

KatB (over 8 years ago)

aesonnack, Does he go out in the garage and do it? Mine like the grass, and I've never tried seeing if they would go on concrete with pads. I'll have to wait til it really rains and see if mine would do it.

RedRoss9 (over 8 years ago)

It's raining here and I've just gotten back from an extended walk with my puggers.  They haven't been out since about 8 this morning so I know they have to go.  However, I'm soaking wet now (not to mention freezing) and they didn't go potty!  I know they have to go because they keep giving me all the usual signals but when I take them outside they drag me back to the porch and sit there looking miserable.  *sigh*  It's so hard being a servant to royalty.

danah (over 8 years ago)

Benny and Laila do not like the rain much either!  We have a car port and leaves are always blowing in...so they believe this is good as grass for taking care of business when raining.  Wonder what will happen when we build a garage next summer??

Madison Rose (over 8 years ago)

Maddie becomes  a princess when it comes to rain and snow.  She MUST be carried and covered up in nasty weather.  Just another reason why she's paper trained, that and the fact that I work all day and don't want her at home suffering.  Living in Pennsylvania, I don't enjoy the thought of having to get up in the middle of a cold and snowy night to take my pup outside.  Guess I'M the one who's spoiled.  Pugs.  Gotta love 'em!

Hardync (over 8 years ago)

I think it is more odd to find dogs that like rain than not!! If I was full of hair, I wouldn't like it either, LOL. Mine will normally go if I walk out in it with them, but most of the time not by themselves. I have to partake in the getting wet as well.

potsie'smomma (over 8 years ago)

mine hate the rain too. my girl will run out an go quick but my little boy will not leave the house-i haveto push him out the door or pick him up.

Mom2Pugs (over 8 years ago)

We had rain every day for two weeks down here, my two did not want to go out! One day when I got Desi to go out side in the rain he turned and peed on the door!  LOL Oh well, the rain washed it off as soon as he did it!  RedRoss9, I guess you could call that a Royal Flush!  LOL

bugsy1 (over 8 years ago)

Our Bugsy just loves water!! What ever form. One of her favorite things in taking a bath

pugsly (over 8 years ago)

My boys pee on the door also and the side of the house, Pugsly started that and taught the other two also. And if it is snowing I have to shovel a path to there favorite potty spots and then they make yellow snow. There are pics of that. Gotta love the little puggers.

Harleysmom (over 8 years ago)

Yes Harley hates the rain! He tip toes around...lol I think he dosen't like to get his feet wet. I call him pris pot when he does this. He definatly dosen't want to go outside to use the bathroom if it's raining.

PugLover521 (about 8 years ago)

My 2 pugs Maggie and Max are the same way they won't go out in the rain or snow.... They really dislike it I have actually seen Maggie walk around puddles to avoid getting her paws wet

kal78 (about 8 years ago)

Well i gues we arent alone! Maggie also HATES the rain. She has actually gotten ALOT better and will do her business and run back in, but she tiptoes in the rain, doesnt like to get her paws wet! On the other hand she LOVES playing in the snow!
