Pug losing weight, I can feel his bones? HELP PLEASE!!!

Nibbler has been sick for over a week. Wednesday (the Dec 22nd) he started acting lethargic, he puked a few times,  he barely responds to anything, he just sleeps or stares. He won’t eat anything, we have tried everything all of his favorite things. He as lost 4 lbs and I can feel his bones. He shakes like crazy.

We took him to the vet Monday Dec 27th, Vet found nothing physically wrong, no temp, nothing obstructing his bowels, no ear infection, no seizures, and so on. Vet gave him an anti nausea shot and prescribed him some pills that are supposed to induce apatite. Neither has worked at all, Nibbler is puking yellow bile, because he has no food in his tummy, he still refuses to eat. I decided yesterday that I was not going to let my dog starve to death, so a few times a day I will opening his mouth and put little bits of peanut butter,  yogurt or maple syrup in his mouth. I read that he might be shaking from lack of food and low blood sugar and maple syrup can help.  But, he is just regressing more and more. He will still drink water a little bit. When I hold him he shakes, I can feel his bones. I am so scared.WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY BABY!

Nibbler was sick similar to this a few months ago, I was freaking out thinking it was PDE, I took him to the vet, got blood test done and all checked out, he was feeling better by the next day (blood test came back good) that time he was only sick a few days and he would still eat a little bit.

Get another vet quick! A dog losing that amount of weight is very bad. Go to an emergency vet service.

I agree, you need a second opinion. There has to be something causing this problem and it seems only to be getting worse the longer you let it go. Find another vet soon if he seems to be getting worse by the day.

that is not good when a Pug will not eat....did he get into anything you are aware of???? could be a cold, but that is a guess, as the previous post say, get a second opinion, as you know him then best, better to be safe than sorry....keep us posted.
it is a good thing if he is still drinking, but the no eating this is concerning.

definitely get a second opinion ASAP! a pug not eating and losing 4 lbs is very concerning. 4lbs is alot for a pug to lose when he isn't on a diet. i would get blood work done again. please keep us updated on nibbler's progress. sending positive thoughts your way that he feels better real soon.

I'm sorry to hear your dog is so sick I would for sure get a second opinion.  Is he able to open his mouth?  I ask this because my pug who is 6 has just been diagnosed with MMM( Masticatory Muscle Myosotis.  He also  lost alot weight would not eat because he could not open his mouth.  I wish you luck and send you lots of postive thoughs.  Please keep us updated.

Sounds a lot like when my Bruno had pancreatitis!  But don't take that as a diagnosis, get him back to a vet and have them do blood tests ASAP.

Hi everyone Nibblers mom here, Thank you for all the nice comments and input.

Update: Nibbler still will not eat anything, but still drinking water. We just got back from the Vet, Nibbler has lost another 1/2 lb. and this time his tummy was tenderer. Doc gave him another different anti nausea shot. They took blood to do blood tests; we will get the results in the morning. Doc's opinion was he thinks it is pancreatitis.  He said if the blood test comes back with no info, we will X-ray him tomorrow and get a second opinion. The MMM is interesting, I will ask him about that tomorrow.

I will keep you posted Thanks again for everything.

The vet called this morning, blood work came back fine. His organs are all fine. His white blood cell count was up a little bit. His pancreas was fine, so it is not pancreatitis. Doc told us to bring him back and now we are going to do x-rays.  Nibbler is there getting x-rays of his tummy and intestines. He has been there for about 30 min. we are just waiting to hear back. I am so worried and sad. What is wrong with my little boy?

Doc said  from the X-rays it looked like Nibbler most likely has bowel disease, we have him on bowel meds and an anti-biotic, he is starting to do little a tiny bit better, I  feel hopeful.  He still will not eat, he spits everything we give him out, we will mix yogurt and peanut butter and put it on the roof of his mouth (he can’t spit it out that way and he really needs calories, nutrients and protein, he is getting skinnier everyday) he still drinks water. And tonight he took a few licks of the peanut butter and yogurt on his own. I have my fingers crossed, thank you for the love and prayers. He needs them.

Somer55, I am sending lots of prayers for your pugger. I hope he gets better soon. Ask your Vet what is best to try and feed him. A bland diet I would think would help right now. Ask about some Nutracal. It may help some.

poor nibbler...well, at least maybe you have an answer. hope he is doing better today. i would try giving him some boiled chicken or cottage cheese and brown rice or boiled sweet potato. stay away from grains like corn. of course, check with your vet first. hope he is doing  better today and the meds are helping a bit. please keep us updated on his progress.

You know what Sucks!?...when your baby boy puggie is sick and you sit by feeling helpless. Nibbler was doing a tiny bit better yesterday; he would eat little bits of chicken and sliced up turkey. We were hopeful that the meds were working. But then he stopped eating again. I boiled him some chicken and he had no interest at all, so I mashed it up with some cream cheese, and put it on the roof of his mouth, like you would peanut butter and he ate a little bit of that. We are still giving him his meds; we are hoping he is just having a bad day.

I don't know what to do. I have spent over $500.00 and we feel like we have done everything, X-rays, blood test, checked every inch of his body.

He has gotten so skinny, he looks very small, like a puppy. It is breaking my heart.

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. he needs them

Would your vet be able to get him a referral to someone who might specialize in stuff like this?  Or to a vet school?  If you're near Virginia I highly recommend the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech.  They have worked wonders before!  I feel so bad for poor little Nibbler.  You know how pugs love their food!

Nibbler was sick all night; we took in to the vet first thing. Nibbler is going in for exploratory surgery now, to try and find anything. Doc is not sure he will make it through.

My heart is breaking, I might have just said goodbye to my baby. Feel like my heart is getting ripped out of my chest. My dog is like one of my kids.

I love my dog so much. He is only 3 years old. This is not fair!

Oh no, sweetie.  I'm not a religious person, but I will say some sort of prayers for your little man.  He knows how much you love him, so you know he's going to try his puggy best to pull through.  You keep sending positive thoughts towards him and keep us updated.  We're here for you, whatever the outcome.

I agree with the boiled chicken, sweet potato and rice.  Puree it also, as it will be easier to swallow.  Applesauce may interest Nibbler too.  I agree with second opinion too...these babies are too precious to just accept any diagnosis.

Praying for you both!

Doc found string and something hard that had bunched up 2 feet of his intestines. Doc had to remove the 2 feet because they were dead. After Nibbler was recovering from surgery he stopped breathing. The doctor worked for 20 min to try and bring him back. My baby dog is gone. My heart is broken, my poor boys are inconsolable (I have 4 sons). This is the worst! I am more sad then I even have words. I loved Nibbler like a child. My boys say they feel like one of their brothers died. I'm so so sad. Thank you for all for your thought and prayers for my family.

I'm so sorry to hear about Nibbler, he was a beautiful pug. I've been coming back periodically checking this post, and hoping they would find out what was wrong and that he would get better. Just remember the good times you had with him. Maybe make a scrap book or something like it so you and your kids can look back and remember him too. It will help a little....if not now, maybe down the road.
