Pugs are very smart so you always have to stay one step ahead. As it took me about a month to train Frankie, we got him at 11 months and from the Animal Shelter, as I said before, we both had to learn, his language, and mine, so we both understood what the other needed. Consistance is the key as well as using their smarts. Frankie acts sometimes like he is brainless, but I know better, he is trying to either make me laugh, or just seeing if I am paying attention!

Potty training a puppy is really not as hard as some people say as long as you learn to read their body language, know your dog's routines and most importantly be consistent. When they're puppies it's really hard to predict when they need to go potty because they have such tiny bladders but what I have noticed from my little one is that they tend to pee after they eat and drink (obviously), when they wake up from a long nap and after playing and running around. What I did with Loopy was pretty much taking him outside every 50/60 minutes. I know it may sound too much but it helps them getting used to the routine of going outside to potty. Also I'd feed him candy and give him lots of praise whenever he did it outside. When I wasn't home I used to leave a newspaper (always on the same spot) and he eventually started peeing and pooping there. He quickly understood that he should do it there whenever I wasn't able to take him out. I never ever yelled at him for peeing inside though, I just ignored it and cleaned it off. As for training I wold say start RIGHT AWAY, it works miracles. Just simple commands like "sit", "no", "come" etc. don't know if it's a pug thing but their attention span is extremely limited so make the training sessions fun and pleasant
all in all I would say that positive reinforcement is the best way to get your dog to learn and respect you, whether it is done with praising or food. Pugs love food but they also love it when you speak nicely to them and show that you're pleased with whatever they did I think it makes them feel appreciated. I also think you should take in consideration being very very consistent, if you don't think it's okay for your dog to, for example, sleep in bed with you then don't ever let him/her sleep there. Same for whatever else you don't think your dog should do such as get food from the table, jumping on people and all of that. If you let them do it once they will think its okay to do it forever and it might seem cute when a tiny puppy jumps up on your guests but they might not find it as funny when your adult dog does it so keep that in mind! I wish you the best with your little one!

What ever your new baby does, no matter how weird it may appear to be, it's probably normal behavior for pugs....and don't feel it's to weird to ask about on here, I can guarantee, someother pug parent (if not all) here has been through it too.
Congrats on your soon to be new arrival.

Marta, thank you so much for your detailed reply! its really hard joining the pug club as i have no idea about dogs what so ever! your reply has been really helpful thank you!! have you any other advice on the best way to train such things as not jumping up? is ignoring his bad behaviour really the best way to stop it?

You're very welcome! I've been in the same situation as you are a couple of months ago when I got my puppy so I know how confusing things can be at first! Well I would say try different methods because each dog has its own personality and what works with mine dog might not work with other ones but what I did with mine was ignoring him, yes. When he jumped I would turn around and walk away and once he was calm I'd tell him to sit and then finally pet him. It worked very well but it was very annoying to have to keep telling people not to pet the dog until he was calm, especially since he always gets so excited when we have guests!
Oh, one more thing, sometimes ignoring certain things won't work because believe it or not pugs are extremely stubborn so make sure they know the word "no" or whatever other word you choose to let them know they're doing something unacceptable. Start training that from day one
h--l--a (about 1 year ago)
Thanks again Marta, i know im a pain but how did you teach your pug the meaning of the word know without punishing him (smacking him etc) does ignoring him work for this too! its so hard to work all this out, and the thought of having an out of control dog is unbearable! xx

Welcome to Pugspot. This is the best place to make pug friends and get some info. Glad you found us.
KatB (about 1 year ago)
Instead of using the word no, I use ah-ah, in a loud manner. I also tell students to use the word LEAVE IT! Use it in a strong manner of voice. The leave it command can be used on alot of things. Like barking at people, other dogs, and bothering things you don't want him too. In the house- if you see him doing something you don't want him to say the command and you can squirt him with water. Or scruff him behind the neck and pull him back away from it. Outside on walks, use a leash correction, which is a quick flick of the leash. Start using the Leave it now. And don't Smack your dog, you will only make him fearful of your hands and he will not come to you and he will start ducking. Pugs are very very smart, but stubborn. So use a food reward when teaching things, like sit, down, heel, front(come). It will work faster for you. Use the same command words each time you work with your pug. Use a really tastie treat that he only gets when you are training. Something he loves best of all treats. Only give the treat when he does the exercise. Keep training short about 15mins. and if your getting upset. Stop. Only work when you are in a good mood. Make it fun.

No problem! I used the same method as KatB , spraying him with water and sometimes giving him a slight touch behind the neck so he would put his focus on me and then I would say "no". The tone of voice you use plays a big role because they don't understand the exact meaning of the word, they can only tell by the tone of voice whethe you're pleased or mad. I avoid using physical contact when scolding him unless it's just a slight touch like I said. One tip that worked for me when teaching commands was to use hand signals along with the command I'm teaching, for example an open hand above my dog's head stands for "seat". Sometimes that's all I have to do and he immediately sits down
I think it helps them them to memorize the commands.

Hiii KatB!! That sounds great, I'm sure I'll have a few more questions when I get him!!! If it hadnt been for pugspot I would be totally lost as everything I read had said different things! Marta the hand signals also sound like a fab idea too I'll put them to the test! I'm based in the UK do u have any suggestions on what food to give him? Dry or wet? There's so much to choose from!! Xxx

They work very well on my puggy
I'm still trying to find out what kind of food works the best for my dog so I unfortunately don't have any great advice on this but my dog still eats puppy food, I feed him Royal Canin Mini Junior and so far it's been working fine. That's the food his breeder reccomended. I have read that you shouldn't feed them wet food when they're puppies so I haven't done that, I think I will avoid it later on as well because it seems to have a lot of fat in it, I'd rather give him something healthy that I will cook myself.

Hello and Welcome!
I have four pugs (two fawn and two black) ...
I don't know what it is about those black ones but they are rotten! LOL
It could be that they are the babies and get away with more!?!
But I'm thinking it's just their nature!
Of course ... I wouldn't have them any other way!
There are a lot of good foods out there ...
My vet recommends Canidae - Grain Free!
A lot of pugs have allergies ... just make sure you avoid food/treats with corn!
AND make sure you read the labels ...
DO NOT BUY ANY FOOD/TREATS MADE IN CHINA!!!
Make sure you give him plenty of fresh water.
Sometimes mine drop food in their water and then they won't drink it.
So I'm cleaning it out and refilling it 2 or 3 times a day.
And they don't get any water after 7pm.
That way when they go out to potty at 9pm we're not getting up to potty again before morning.
It's different with a puppy - you might be getting up a couple of times a night for a few months.
BE CAREFUL ... they are like potato chips ... you can't have just one!!!
Can't wait to see pictures!

Thanks again marta, I think my pup is on wet food ATM n I'm desperate to change it when he gets home!!
Hello Elgor, haha hopefully the black ones aren't too cheeky! As that's what my little man is, did you find them harder to train? Oh no! I'm not looking forward to the sleepless nights, how long did they last for?
Also does anyone have any tips on settling them in at night when they first come home to reduce crying??
h--l--a (about 1 year ago)
Could I also ask do you think it is nasty if I am putting my pup into a crate his first night at home? Everywhere I read it says it is best to get the pup used to the crate before shutting them in? :S helppp!! Xxxx
Marta (about 1 year ago)
About the crying, I prepared myself for lots of sleepless nights before I picked up my puppy and surprisingly he didn't cry a bit the first night! I was so surprised he just slept all night long, of course he whined a bit because he wanted me to pick him up but I just petted him and he would fall asleep again. So unfortunately I can't really help you on that one. As for the crate I don't think it would be a problem at all, your puppy is probably in a crate most of the time right now anyway and you can have the crate next to you in the bedroom so that he will feel you close and know that you're there

Hi All, Ernie spent his first night at home last night and it was absolutely perfect no tears or nothing! It was a breeze! The only thing I have concerns with is teaching him the NO command, I obviously know that when he's doing something wrong to move him on or take it off him and say NO, will he just learn the command from this? Xx
