Im having alot of trouble toilet training my male cyrus. He is almost 5 months old and just seems not to be picking up my efforts in trying to train him. I have puppy pads down but he only uses them occasionally. He sneaks off through the night and leaves atleast 2 - 3 smelly suprises for me i just feel im getting no where. ive tried clapping my hands loudly and saying NO when i have caught him in the act but he will just hide somewhere and do it again. Ive moved a soiled pads outside and said wee wee's but he just tilts his head and gives me that " but im so cute" look. I have praised and rewarded him the few times he's done it outside or on the pads but he only does it very rarely in the right spots. My partner is almost at his peek with Cyrus as our Husky Montana was a super quick learner. He's also got a habbit of chewing he will destroy anything insight from my toilet paper, My underwear from the clothes airer, shoes, leaves, paper well absolutley anything really. He has so many toys and teething toys ive even tried a Kong filled with his favourite treats but he would rather find things he shouldnt. Help me please

try putting both pups out at the same time, big pup will show little pup what to do. you may need to crate him at night so as not to get into a habit inside. you can try a squirt bottle with water and spray him and tell him no when he does something wrong (chewing things). he should get the idea fairly soon as what is right or wrong.

First off, you need to get a crate/cage for your puppy to sleep in at night. Stop leaving him free to run the house when you can not watch him. Even during the day when you are at work. Crate training is not a bad thing and can really help IF IT IS DONE CORRECTLY! Don't believe the old saying a dog will not potty in its bed. That is stupid. They will if they are left in there to long and not had a outside break. When you got to go, you got to go. At his age, he can only hold it about a 1/2 hour - 1 hour. With my puppies, I started by taking them outside first thing in the morning. I feed. Then take them back outside after feeding, then every hour after that until bed time. Also put them on a good quality dry dog food. Less poo. Make note of around what time of day they poo. Then watch everyday you will see a schedule for poo. Dogs go about poo around 3 to 4 times a day if on good brand of food. Alot of us also use a baby's pressor gate to block off an area like the kitchen, bathroom, where there is no carpet. Don't let him run the house until you start seeing progress. At his age he is still very young and can NOT hold it long, so for potty training to work you and your family must all help by getting this little guy outside to relieve himself. Yelding at him will only make him afraid of you. It does nothing but harm. If you catch him in the act, you can scold but just use a deep voice tone and say like no potty go outside, or ah-ah. If you are scolding after he has already done it, he doesn't know what he's being yeld at for. It isn't his fault he pottied inside. It is your for not taking him out enough. I always tell my students this. If you are patient, and do your part, potty training should go good. When you do take him outside, do it on lead. Walk out to the area where you want him to go. Take him to that spot every time. Tell him go potty. Keep saying it. When he pees or poos, tell him, good boy, and give him a treat. Use the command word, it helps training. And don't be in a hurry. Let him sniff around for awhile. It can take a good 10-15 mins. Let him know with you voice tone he did good.
With chewing on things. All puppies do this. Just like human baby's they are teething. Make sure you have chews. When you catch him chewing on something he shouldn't. Take it away. You can use a water squirt bottle set on stream. I have one in everyroom. When you catch them, grab the bottle and squirt them in the face and Say, LEAVE IT! Use a strong commanding voice tone. You can use this command on anything you don't want your dog to get into, even when they see other dogs go by and start barking. Hope this has helped you some. Patience please. Don't expect alot until around a yr. old. Some puppies learn fast, some take longer. It all depends on how much time you put into it.

PS. Please think of having him neutured soon. If done early he will not hike his leg on furniture.

Just started training my 12 week old. We got him home, took him in the back yard and sure enough he pee'd. Lots of praise and a bit of his kibble. Same with the poo. He was in his crate from eleven last night until six thirty this morning, no messes, out he went and did his thing. Maybe I'm just lucky. Crate training is the only way to go.

Is it to late to crate train my 12 week old. I bought him at 5 weeks old and ever since he has been able to roam the house and we even leave him free when no one is home. He is actually very good.

that's the ideal age to crate train Frankie!

Frankiethepug, no it isn't to late to crate/cage train. Glad to hear he is doing so well inside. But, he is still young and can get into trouble. So please make sure your house is pug proofed. Having them crate trained helps with many different situations. And IF done right, can really help with potty training. Please remember, things may be going good on the potty training and then take a bad lash. Expect this up to a year. The time you take with them, getting them outside, makes the difference on how it goes. And having males altered will really help with hiking and humping when you have it done when puppies.
