UTIs, diabetes and Cushings Disease?

Hi...it's been a while since I've been on here but hoping for some help. Sophia has been suffering with a UTI since May. We treated her for 2 weeks with antibiotics. Just short of 2 weeks later it was back. We treated her again , this time 3 weeks. It's been just short of 1week since last pill and she is already showing signs again, frequent urination. She seems fine after a few days in on the meds. No blood yet as as was present before. As for the diabetes, we've been raising the amount of insulin about every 6 months or more, based on tests. The vet mentioned testing for Cushings disease, might be behind the need to continually raise the insulin. I went on line and saw that frequent UTIs are also mentioned with Cushings disease. I am so hoping this is not her case. Maybe diet? She's on Hills Prescription for diabetic. She was on Hills dry and Royal Canin wet but changed back to all Hills in January to try to get triglycerides down. Hope someone has ideas or experience. We do have an apptmnt for Friday but will try to get in tomorrow. I know this is uncomfortable for her.

Thank you so much, Usha. She had a little blood last night right before bed and then the second time she went this morning a little. I called the vet and they are getting us in today at noon. I know how painful these infections are and I really feel for her. I so hope that we can get this under control and maybe a change in diet might be all but we'll see what her doctor says. Thankfully her normal doctor who knows her well is there today. I have been praying day and night for her...XXXOOO back to you and Ravi....

Dr suspects kidney stones and has scheduled an ultrasound for next week. In the meantime we're back on antibiotics and hoping they kick back in quick. She didn't want to eat all her supper so I gave her a llittle chicken so we could do her insulin. Rough day at the vet...they say she's so quiet and good. She's snoring with her head on my foot. My poor little sweetie.

Came in late on this one. I was just thinking kidney stones. A while back Rosie had UTI and they were concerned about stones. Hope it gets figured out.

They thought that my previous Daisy had stones. She seemed like she had UT I's one after another. Eventually, they got a little better, but we had to put her to sleep because the rest of her body was shutting down. Good luck with Sophia and we hope she gets better soon. Lexi, Libby, Lilo(the cat), and I are praying for her............Doc

So sorry about Daisy, Doc. Was she a senior? Did her body shut down due to the uti's? Katb, what happened with Rosie? I know Sophia is getting up there in age...she'll be 11 in October. The diabetes doesn't help. She is so obviously uncomfortable today even though she did eat all her breakfast. Thanks for prayers....I know He hears.

Daisy was fourteen years old and very loved by our family. She was a special dog that worked well with foster kids that we would get. She would always show her love to them no matter how they treated her. She would bring the kids to respect animals and people. RIP Daisy and Gretta. She is now buried along with Gretta, under an Ash tree in our back yard.

Sofezmom, Rosie just had a bad uti. Meds were givien and she is fine. I was really worried about stones when it was told that it could be. She had to do two rounds of meds for the UTI to get rid of it. I give her and all my dogs cranberry gel tabs in their morning meal now, HA! I hear it helps.

So glad, KatB, that it wasn't stones. They told us yesterday about the cranberry tabs so I asked my husband to go on Amazon (his favorite place) to check on them for me. Also something called Dasuquin.

Soezmom, I bought the cheapest ones, like from the dollar stores if they have them. I have found them at walmart, kmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar. If you have these stores. Just get the cheapest ones.

Sofemom, saw your post and the cushings. My poor olivia Rose passed away on May 17th from A typical Cushings. hardest thing I ever had to watch was her going through four months of pain and discomfort. By the time we decided to let her go my 4 year old was a zombie with no control over her body and was also blinded by her illiness. horrible, horrible disease. Glad your Sophia doesn't have it

Whole Dog Journal has a few articles on Cushings.
Diagnosing Cushings

An article on treating Cushing's naturally.

"Canine Vitex Plus" is a natural herbal supplement for Cushings.

BTW, that vet food Royal Canin and Science Diet are some of the worst foods you can be giving her. Sienna was diagnosed with pancreatitis and the vet gave her it. I took the bag home, looked at the ingredients and went back to return the food. I did my own research and came up with a healthy nutritious diet for her based on a WDJ article on pancreatitis.

Just like our own health, we need to question everything. Our babies health and longetivity depend on it. Vets don't get a lot of courses in nutrition. Take a look at the ingredients in the food that they gave Sophia. She needs a good diet, otherwise her bones and other organs will suffer due to lack of what she needs.

Cathym-I'm so sorry about Olivia Rose. It must have broke your heart to see her that way and to lose her. Did she pass because of the treatment or was she beyond treatment? We're going to be testing Sophia for Cushings after we have her stitches removed from this surgery. This is the second doctor to suspect this disease but first testing. I do hope they don't find this but she has a few of the symptoms and the adrenal gland was swollen...I think that was how it was described.
SMommy-thanks for the articles, I used to get these. Will read them both. I'm so confused about the food. Both our vet and the vet at the hospital we had the surgery recommend this food. There are a million ingredients so you have to wonder. I have considered researching to make my own.
Oh KatB- thank you, will look at Walmart. Are they specifically for dogs?

Thanks everyone for concerns and advice. Sophia is feeling better I think because she's acting more herself everyday.

Yes, My Olivia passed because with 4 months of treatment she only got worse and worse and let me tell you we tried everything. Over $8000.00 worth of everything. Finally, we decided she just was slowly dying and we had her put down. Nothing was helping. But I thank God we had pet insurance without that we never would have been able to afford all the different treatments they put her through.

Wow 8k with insurance! Sorry, shouldn't say that right off but , Jeez....
We don't have insurance and have heard nothing of costs...yet. But Sophia is healing from surgery and getting back to her normal little self. Can't imagine that the road ahead is harder than recent but who's to know...
Thank you for your honesty. We will deal with things as they come. So hope that things will be easier than expected. She is so precious to us...

SMommy- couldn't open those articles without paying years prescription. Oh well...
I've been reading up on the Internet and asking other special needs mommies to help with decision. Did notice that on the can it says that it is basically a temporary diet...

I summarized the article in a few paragraphs. Would it be unethical to post it? If so, I won't.
