What potty training worked for you?

I have been trying to potty training my little boy since i brought him home almost a month ago he used to go on pee pee pads that i put in three different spots in the house and that was working great for a minute. It kind of stopped working so i decided to go ahead and crate train him it works ok but he is still having accidents. Do I put him back in his kennel after i take him out to go pee, can i let him run around in the livingroom and play after he has been taken out to go to the bathroom? It seems he pees every thirty minutes and somtimes i guess i dont get it timed right! How can i teach him to tell me he needs to go?

hi skmickey0528, welcome to pugspot!!! i think you are doing too much and not giving it time to work. pugs can be stubborn when it comes to potty training. i hate to say it, but my guys are both around 5yrs. and they still have accidents once in a while, especially when it's raining out. anyway, i did not use the crate method so i can't help you there. i don't really like the pee pads(except for emergencies) unless of course you live in an apartment and going outside at a moments notice isn't possible. what i did was just take them out every couple of hours, about 20 minutes after meals, right after they wake up, and after a good play. when you take them out..use a phrase like "go potty", keep some cheerios in your pocket or other treats, and when they go outside, get real excited, praise praise praise, give a treat. pugs aim to please and will soon catch on. you have to keep a real good eye on them inside and if you see them sniff around or sniffing and going in circles, immediately take them out. patience and consistancy is the key. good luck and let us know how it goes.

In addition to the good advice from RosienMikeysMom...I taught Bunny to ring a bell every time she wants to go out.  When you take your pug out take his foot and hit the bell so that it rings then proceed outside to take care of business, eventually he will ring the bell on his own.  Bunny is nearly 3 and still uses the bell, I find it convenient because I can hear the bell anywhere in the house.

When she was little I used a litter box in her crate so she wouldn't potty on the bed.  It was just a small litter box with a pee pee pad, she used that for awhile.  I got rid of it once she decided the box was for sleep and didn't use it to potty anymore.

i did the same with rosie, bunnypug...she also rings a bell. mikey just kinda stares at you trying to do this esp kinda thing. it really isn't hard to train them to do it. the only drawback is rosie will ring the bell if she just wants attention...silly puggie!

Buuny will ring the bell sometimes just to go outside to smell the air, and she can be really crazy about ringing that bell (especially if you know she doesn't need to go potty and you are in the middle of doing something)!

skymickey, You mit consider getting your little boy a belly band and put the cheapest maxi pads you can buy inside of it. They don't like it and won't pee in it. But if they do then you have no pee mess to clean. I use them on my jap. chin when I can't keep an eye on him. It works really well, and lots of folks use them on the males. Make sure you get one that is not to snug, but also fits well. How is he doing with the poo? Any accidents there? With males you want to also consider getting him neutered as soon as it's time. Ask your Vet. That will help big time with marking, and humping before it starts. Your puggy is still very young and potty training takes time. Just like a real baby, they need time to grow inside, and learn to hold it. Takes time. Put him on a little time schd. and stick to it. I always took my puppy's out every 30 mins. I crates at night, with last potty right before I go to bed. I closed off the kitchen or a bathroom, with a pressor gate and potty pads or paper when I wasn't able to watch them or had to go out. Always puppy proof any room so that they can't get into things that could hurt them. And use a command as Carol said, It really works. Go out side with them on leash and that way they get the idea faster what they are out there to do. Once they got it. then your good to go. Hope this helps. don't give up. Takes time.

My mom had gotten my pug three weeks before I came home from college so she did all of the potty training and when I got home she was completely housebroken and she had never been a outside at all until my mom had gotten her. It toook a lot of work but my mom took Abby out every half an hour and then it progressed to every hour to go to the bathroom she caught on quickly that she was out there to use the bathroom just because my mom took her out so often. Occasionally she would have her accidents on the floor in the very beginning but now she hasn't had any accidents for two weeks straight now. I take her out every hour or two but she has learned that when she whines we will take her out to go to the bathroom. So now when she needs to go potty she whines to go outside. My mom had used the puppy pads in the beginning with her well, she sleeps all through the night without going potty in her kennel either. Usually I put her to bed about 11:30 at nights and I take her out right before I put her to bed, then she doesn't wake up or need to go to the potty until about 7:30 the next morning. She has been such a good puppy about housebreaking, my mom is astonished how easy she has been to train! I hope that your little pug will learn soon but consistency is key, just keep taking him out every half an hour to an hour and he eventually will get the hang of it! It helps to give treats too when they do go outside and eventually they will associate that going outside is a good thing!! Good luck to you and your pug!!

Thanks for all the advice, potty training is coming along and I am still working on it. He no longer pees in his kennel and I think its only a matter of time before he is always going to go outside. I am going to put in a doggy door for him. Has anyone used one with there pugs?

ill also let u know something else hun. if he is peeing inside and its carpet wherever he does it get white vinegar and water it down a little bit  in a spray bottle and use that when you are cleaning up his mess,, the smell of the vinegar will actually hide the scent of his wee so he is not likely to do it there again and the vinegar also helps with the stains too. its a fantastic and cheap way to try and prevent him for peeing inside..

Wyatt also rings the bell to go potty outside, but he'll also ring it when his water bowl is empty, when he wants to go outside to play and when he wants food!  He knows if he rings the bell we will come into the kitchen to see what he wants, so I guess he really has US trained to respond to the bell!!  Little Mattie has never gotten the hang of the bell, but if we see her circling, she has to go out.  Wyatt was a dream to train, Mattie not so much!

My little pug dog Jelly bean is completely house trained now and never has accidents in the house. I found she took longer than other dogs to house train but remember pugs are small so you cant expect them to be house trained until there a good few months old. I took her outside regularly and said go wees when she went to the toilet and gave her a treat, this seemed to work and now shes 3 and if i say go wee she goes so its worth it especially when we had to get a wee sample for the vets!! Give them time, dont get mad this just makes pugs worse and put newspaper by the back door, treat them when they do well and just tidy up any accidents!
