Lexi gets 25mg caplets(food store brand). One in the morning and one before bedtime. They do help.... If you live in a cold climate, make sure that you have a humidifier running also. This will help your pugger to breath with less coughing, it'll also help you out. Allergies are especially bad this year, in Minnesota, due to it being a dry fall. Lexi also had an elongated pallet and narrow nose nares. These were corrected by surgery.(anything to help them breath). There are alot things you can do to help them with the scratching. Oatmeal baths, fish oil in their water, the Benadryl, and humidity. Good Lusk and keep me posted. Welcome to PugSpot. Doc and his girls
I just read your profile and seen that Lewie is 11 years old. My previous pug, Gretta, was 9 years old when she pasted away. I learned much about pugs very quickly and will pass it on to you. Keep Lewie's weight down! I know it's hard to do. The trachea can collapse and cut off breathing. Gretta also had a very severe kind of pneumonia, one that antibiotics would help. Breathing is a very critical issue in puggers. I would also call your vet and ask him if Lewie could take Benadryl. Doc
How's his allergies and scratching? Did the Benedryl help? Doc
Im so sorry I have only just noticed these messages? Didnt get any notification or anything.. Strange..!
Anyways hes a lot better now, it seems the coughing and hacking comes about when the temperature drops and at the moment its quick mild so he hasnt been too bad. Strangely enough I didnt get a humidifier but have been putting a wet towel with Albus Oil on the radiator in the evenings (and kept heating on all night if real cold), I
Oopps, posted before finishing..
I have also been cooking up vegatables to go with his evening biscuits and warming up soya milk to go with his breakfast. As well as all this hes been having his inhayler and benelyn as and when needed and all of this combined has really helped him. Oh plus I have bought one of those beds for him that are raised of the ground, as the floor is wooden apparently its warmer to have them off the floor.. Anyways I have done that too, im really trying just about anything.. Oh also.. When I have a shower I put him in the room so he can breathe the steam in.. Lol.. Having seen what Im doing all wrote down seems like it must take up my whole day but it really doesnt, have got a right routine going on now. But anyways, yes doing alot better, not sure which of the treatments is working to just going to keep them all going for now. Hoping once it warms up more that he will be alot better. Sorry to hear about greta, im going to be absolutly devosated when that day comes for lewie but for now hes my right hand man and goes everywhere with me. Even if I do have to carry him as he gets tired. Hope your all well, havent been on for a while as been busy with work - But I will be on more often now, will put up some more pics later xxx
Did you get the long post? I hit the wrong button. Doc
Hi! I'm having much trouble with getting messages. How's Lewie doing now? The picture is so cute. My little grandson and Lexi are real good buddies. Look at my pictures of them in a wagon in my pictures. What country do you live? Get to Gretta. It's a long story.....if you want to read it. In Oct., 2010, we had to put our rescue blk.lab down. She was a very good dog and worked well with all of our foster kids. Anyway, her body started to shut down(she was 14 years old). I needed to fill the void in my heart, so we went to a rescue in Minneapolis and adopted another lab mix that came from Ky.. Right after we got her, she came down with kennel cough which turned into pneumonia. She was in the hospital on iv's and almost didn't make it. She finally got better and came home. Then my little 9 year old pug, Gretta, came down with kennel cough. We spent alot of time at the vets and tried different antibiotics. Nothing worked. They thought maybe a super-strain of pneumonia. She passed away laying next to my easy chair. I was so broken, my heart was shattered. My oldest daughter found a little 4 year old girl pug that needed a home, and gave her to me. I fell in love right away. It was the best medicine for me. I learned very much from Gretta on what to expect of a pug. After she passed, the vet sent her down for an autopsy. They found that she had PDE, a collapsed trachea, elongated pallet, and many other things wrong. The first few weeks Lexi(my new pug) lived hear, she had 8mm. of pallet removed, and her nose nares were enlarged. After two months she had her first dental and 5 teeth were removed. I swore to take care of my new puggie better that my last one. Since than she had one more tooth removed and two cysts removed inside her mouth. She is the m ost spoiled pug ever. I also am a big sponsor of Mid West Pug Rescue-MN. division. This is really getting to be a book. I feel so bad when someone else looses a fur-babie. I try helping anyone I can with what I learned because I don't want them going through what I did. I wish you the best of luck with Lewie and anything I can help with, just give me a shout!
Im having trouble with my messages too, and uploading pics.. V Annoying.. Lewie is doing very well thank you, we went to the beach a few days ago and we both slept like complete babies that night! Must of been the see air..! We only live an hour away from the closest beach so im going to try and take him a few times a month as if it helps him rest and sleep i will do anything! But to be fair with the weather warming up he has been alot better, but not sure if thats to do with everything else I give him (The steam shower, veg, inhayler, wet towel on radiator etc..) I have also recently bought this little fan thing which is made by tixilix, basically it is battery run and has a little fan inside which blows out vapour, and after 8 hours it turns off. Its for kids really but it does seem to help. I live in Swindon in England, where abouts are you? So sad to hear about Greta, im sure she had a very loving life with you guys even though it was cut a little short. I have told my family to section me when my lewie goes as I will not be in a good way haha. But we are both enjoying lfe at the moment, hes got a good few years left in him yet. Its his birthday on the 1st of June, I will be having a bit of a party for the little man Well I must go, have a lovely day xxxxx
Hi, I never even got a notice that I had a message Anyways, we live about 35 miles north of Minneapolis-St.Paul, Minnesota. We have very many lakes around us and we live half a block away from one. We love to fish(I have two boats), and go to the cabin. Last night Lexi had a pug party at MN Midwest Pug Rescue. I am involved with the rescue and we like to attend all the events. It is so good to see all the rescued pugs find a fur-ever home and meet their new mom's and dad's. Never been to England and I thought that you made a spelling mistake and meant to say Sweden.(boy am I dumb). Lexi doesn't like the snow and hates to go out in it...HA! Lexi has had her nose nares(nostrils) enlargened, had 8mm. of her upper pallet removed, six teeth removed, and had two cysts inside her mouth removed. Like I say, I'm really gun-shy(scared) and afraid of loosing her. After what I went through with Gretta, I learned the do's and don't's of raising a puggie. Gotta go, will talk another time. You also have a good week. Doc
Wow sounds like where u live is very picture-Esq..! Swindons a busy built up town, it does have its nice forest and parks in the area but I like to go further a field to find somewhere peaceful and open for the boy. Swindons about an hour and a half away from London (Have you heard of that?). Must be so nice that you can go off on your boat when you want Lexis ahd quite a bit of work done then, lewies had a time of it too. Once he got really il and the vet said it was down to compacked anal glands - But because I knew my dog really well I knew it was something else so took him to a different vets for a 2nd opinion and turned out he had pancrea-itus.. Poor thing had to go under a few times and then we found out he had a dairy intollerance. Hes also been under about 4 times to have teeth out and has had 2 ulcers too. Hes such a bugger for having his teeth brushed so have been using this herb called "plaque off", its not as good as a good bruching would do but it does help. And like i said before he has that bronchitus which can really take its toll over the winter months. The last 2 weeks have been quite warm tho so his coughing hasnt been so bad thank god. Giving him a wash tonight as when we went out this morning he pee`d all over his front leg (he likes to wee like a girl when lazy haha). Anyways, have a lovely day! (I dont get notifications either, I just look on the off chance - The website should look into it really).xx
Hi Kimmi, Just a quick reply to Lewies coughing. How much does he weigh and how old did you say he is? Has he ever had kennel cough? Have you ever had his trachea checked? Enough of the questions, it is getting very nice out around here. Temp. yesterday was 68deg.F. Today it's getting up to 72. Yippie!!!! Can't wait for the ice to go off the lakes. I just started back to work last week. I've retired twice already, but got too bored and went back to work.. Too much idle time is no good for anyone... Gotta go. Have a good day! Doc
He only weighs 8.4kg and hes 12 on June the 1st. I have had everything checked with regards to his trachea. No never had kennel cough either, hes been doing really well the past few weeks. He would normally have me up every 30 minutes through the night with his cough but he has been sleeping through quite soundly which is great. Went on a long walk before work this morning, so he will just chill for the day now. Its getting quite nice here now, although just checked weather forcast and its only 5 degress out.. But still only 8am so hopefully that will pick up.. Have a nice day tho! xx
Hi, am having problems getting use to the new web-site. Sounds like Lewie may have had a respiratory infection. Glad to hear he's feeling better. It's been 70F. and beautiful out. The ice is off all the lakes(haven't got the boats out yet), and the grass is turning green. I think that summer is around the corner.HA! We've been going on walks and Lexi has been going to my work and having a blast. We're going to try making a video of Lexi and title it "Lexi's Day at Work", and just show everyone what it's really like for her. It should be pretty good, if I ever get it done. Will talk again, got to go to work......Doc
